10-Bean-Soup...delicious and nearly free!

Wednesday, March 31, 2010

I am always looking for ways to save at the grocery store and still feed my family nutritious, tasty dinners.

Dinners that cost me less than $1 per person are always a bonus! I have been shopping at Sprouts more frequently lately, and found something I wanted to try on a recommendation from my Mom. Ten-bean soup is something that you purchase dry by the scoop at Sprouts. It costs about $1.75 per pound, and you’d be STUNNED at how much soup you can get for a pound!

After purchasing the soup, I began searching for recipes in Google and stumbled upon a recipe that looked SO delicious. My recipe came from HERE by Meenakshi Matai. She was very gracious and willing to let me blog about my experience using her recipe.

There were a few things that I found to be attractive about her recipe. #1 – I already had most of the ingredients needed to make the soup. #2 – You can soak the beans while you are sleeping, and begin preparing the soup in the morning. One of my favorite things to do is, after lunches are packed, beds are made, and breakfast is served, I like to have SOME idea of what is for dinner, and prepare what I can ahead of time. With this recipe, you have already soaked the beans the night before, and you add all of the ingredients to your Crockpot or slow cooker, and you are done with dinner! How sweet is that?! #3 – this meal is quite low in calories because it contains only beans, vegetables, water and spices. You can feel completely guiltless after eating dinner!

My recipe varied slightly from Meenakshi’s because I did not have a green pepper to add to my 10-bean soup. I also didn’t have any fresh tomatoes, but I DID have a can of whole tomatoes seasoned with basil. I added these to my soup. It smelled absolutely delicious in the house all day long, and I couldn’t WAIT to try my new, nearly free soup! The soup was very flavorful and tasty. I made 1.5 of her recipes because I bought 1.5 cups of 10-beans, and WHOA did it make a lot of soup! I didn’t buy NEARLY a pound of beans, so I only spent pennies on our dinner. I froze the leftovers, and we will have them again next week – so that cuts in HALF what I spent because we will be eating it TWICE! I served a small salad with our soup, and it was a delicious dinner, indeed!

Speaking of Sprouts – I purchase something exclusively from Sprouts that I MUST tell you about! Organic lollipops! My Mom first purchased these lollipops for my daughter when she was around 6 months old. We were going to get brave and cut her hair, but we needed something to distract her and keep her still for long enough to trim! My Mom is a huge Sprouts shopper, and she stumbled upon them during one of her shopping trips. The flavors are so intense and delicious that you feel like you have the authentic fruit in your mouth. Emily loves them and they have saved my butt numerous times on long phone conversations, plane rides, and salon haircuts! You can purchase them in a small bag, or individually (6 suckers for $1) at the register. Sprouts is also running a special for Easter and a GIANT bag of assorted flavors of these organic lollipops is $4.99 right now.

Coupons: Part 2

Tuesday, March 30, 2010

This blog correlates with yesterday’s blog, and I hope to hear from you regarding your thoughts of the Nightline segment.

This tip stems from an experience that I had on a Sunday afternoon at Wal-Mart: I was in the check-out line behind two older women. The lady checking out was taking a particularly long time to move through the line and leave. Because of the length of time that she spent at the register, I began paying attention to what it was that she was doing.

Well, about 20 minutes later I figured out what was going on. I was frustrated and impatient, but I was also intrigued at the outcome of her shenanigans. She came to Wal-Mart completely prepared with everything that was on her list. She made notes in the margins of her list with the sale prices and the stores that were offering these prices. She presented these ads (from the Sunday paper) to the cashier and she honored each and every one of them. This was a tedious process, but she ended up saving nearly 50% of the cost of her trip. The cashier was so patient and friendly, and she encouraged me to try and do the same.

I have yet to try this technique myself, but I am excited to do so. This little-known technique will keep you from driving from store to store in order to find the best deals and complete your shopping list. Sounds like a winner to me!

Coupons and their potential...

Monday, March 29, 2010

As I was clipping coupons in the Sunday Paper this morning, I was reminded of a segment on Nightline that impacted me heavily. This story struck me so hard, in fact, that I couldn’t fall asleep, and in turn, relayed it to my husband, mom, dad, sister, and brother-in-law.

I just couldn’t believe the savings that these two coupon-gurus were finding. A couple of things that were memorable to me:

*Arrive at the grocery store prepared with coupons that correspond with the items on your shopping list.
*Don’t forget your Catalina coupons – those that print out after you have paid for your items.
*Stocking up on an item that is on sale AND you have a coupon for could leave you with more money than you entered the store with. *(WHAT?!)*

Firstly, I have mentioned in previous blogs that I purchase store-brand products almost exclusively. Better said – if a store brand is available, that’s what I choose, save ketchup and Cheerios. However, I am re-thinking my strategy completely after watching this segment. The savings that they achieve is stunning, and you will be amazed when you watch it as well.

Secondly, I have found that Wal-Mart offers the lowest prices of any grocery store in my area. However, they are less likely (in my experience) to offer sales on items that I purchase regularly. Their prices are steadfast and if you offer the lowest prices around, what’s the need to put these items on sale? Having watched the Nightline segment, I may try my hand at other supermarkets that offer weekly sales on commonly purchased items.

Watch the Nightline segment – it will completely change your view of couponing and grocery shopping!

Save-A-Lot

Saturday, March 27, 2010

So…Save-A-Lot was a no-go. I decided to venture out yesterday, load up the baby, and drive across two cities to save some money on my groceries. My experience was unusual, to say the least.

I wasn’t able to complete my whole grocery list which was frustrating. They did not have any romaine lettuce, their assortment of meats was slightly creepy, and I was dissatisfied with their selection of toothpaste, to name a few. Selection was, in fact, a huge issue for me. There was often no variety to choose from.

The store was small, offering significantly fewer products than a typical grocery store. There is no bakery, and no deli.

I am not interested in being bombarded with sales associates and their questions, but it is always nice to know that they’ve seen you come in. No one spoke with me the entire time I was in their store (roughly an hour). I would have appreciated a, “are you finding everything ok today?” or “how are you today?”

Shortly after I arrived at Save-A-Lot, they launched a soup kitchen of sorts in the front of the store between the check-out and the produce. The entire situation was awkward and uncomfortable for me, and several other shoppers that were purchasing groceries around the same time.

Having said all of this, I will probably not be returning to Save-A-Lot. I am, however, EXTREMELY excited about visiting my new Aldi store when it opens on April 22nd. I have heard great things about this store, mostly from my Aunt, who shops at Aldi regularly. She mentioned to me that they stand behind each and every product that they carry. If you are dissatisfied with a product, Aldi will reimburse you for DOUBLE the retail price of the item. What a great way to demonstrate their dedication to superior products! Visit ALDI to find the store nearest you!

Just a tiny reminder – World Market sent an email this morning boasting 25% off Easter items. World Market is a GREAT place to find unusual toys that your kids are sure to love. Finish up those Easter Baskets for less!

Savings this weekend!

Friday, March 26, 2010

This weekend, I will be taking advantage of several email coupons and discounts I have received in the recent past.

Kid to Kid
I received a coupon for Kid to Kid Children’s and Maternity Consignment in my email this week. The coupon is for $5 off when you spent $25.

Plato’s Closet
Plato’s Closet is my favorite local consignment boutique for men and women. When I took some items in to consign, I entered my email address into their database. About an hour after I left, I received a coupon for $5 off my next purchase at Plato’s Closet.

Save-A-Lot
There was a segment on the local news this morning about Save-A-Lot Food Stores. The segment highlighted Save-A-Lot’s dedication to low prices and fabulous online coupons. I visited their website, and discovered that there were over SIX PAGES of printable coupons for a variety of grocery items. I am interested in being added to their mailing list (the segment this morning mentioned receiving a coupon for $5 off when you spend $20) and discovering even more savings opportunities. The woman that led the segment on the news purchased $80 worth of groceries for $44!

Remember…these are simply guidelines. If you do not live in the North Texas area, or are in a community where none of these stores are available, I encourage you to venture out and discover what IS available to you. Maybe you have a Job Lots instead of a Big Lots. Maybe your children’s and maternity consignment store goes by a different name. Start thinking about the venues where you can experience significant savings. ALWAYS REMEMBER – deleting unwanted emails from your inbox IS FREE, but you can’t receive savings if you don’t sign up!

Fresher Produce!

Thursday, March 25, 2010

Do you buy a lot of produce? I know I do! It seems like I always need to run to the store for some fresh romaine lettuce or a purple onion.

Things like carrots and onions seem to last longer in the refrigerator than grapes or tomatoes, but I have a solution that will help your produce stay fresh longer and keep you from having to throw out ripened fruits and vegetables.

Forever Bags are an As Seen On TV item, but they are available in most stores like Wal-Mart and Target. I, personally, purchase my Forever Bags at Big Lots. They are $4.00 for 16 bags ~ 8 - 9”x15” bags and 8 – 12”x17” bags.

Here’s how they work: Forever bags are made of an all-natural and environmentally friendly material. Fruits and vegetables exude ethylene gases as they ripen, and Forever Bags absorb and remove these gases, thus slowing the ripening and aging process.

The bags have proven to slow the ripening of my fruits and vegetables significantly. I am able to reuse the bags, preventing the inevitability of purchasing more bags. You will find that you can keep your fruits and vegetables fresh for a considerable amount of time, giving you the opportunity to eat them until they are gone, instead of throwing them out and buying fresh. Give them a try, Forever Bags are a great trick!

New clothes for everyone!

Wednesday, March 24, 2010

I absolutely love to shop – I could do it every day! I am always looking for great prices on clothing for my toddler, Emily, and the rest of the family. I have found a few tricks as to how to shop smart, and keep the family from going naked or sporting those high-water pants we all know and love. I’m here to let you in on the secret!

Truth be told, it’s more common sense, but while you are busy thinking of every last detail of EVERYTHING else, you may have overlooked it.

Let’s talk about the little ones first: When you run in to Target for some milk and diapers, take a quick swing past the clearance clothing. Target is AWESOME about putting children’s clothing on clearance from 30% to 75% off. The clothes that are going on clearance, however, are usually the season that just ended. So how can you possibly buy this stuff? BUY NEXT YEAR’S! For example, Emily is a December baby. So she will be 1, 2,3 years old in the Winter. When Fall/Winter clothing goes on clearance, I purchase next year’s (don’t tell my husband!) clothing for prices that are UNREAL! When Spring/Summer clothing goes on clearance, I will buy clothing for next year as well. This saves you money, but also keeps you from the panic that you feel when you dress them in those jeans that fit last week, and are now cropped. Oops!

Before doing this, try to “look into your crystal ball” and determine if your child is true-to-size or if they are deliciously chubby or more petite. This will help you buy clothing that will actually fit them when the time comes.

Now for the big kids: The good news is…the same concept applies for you and your husband (or wife.) The bad news is…I am a little bit more hesitant to purchase things and then find that they are too small (or too big) by the time I’m ready to wear them. This isn’t a savings OR a self-esteem booster! If you remain constant in your sizing, you have no worries.

This is also something that you can apply to your life if you are planning to have a baby, as well. Kohl’s and Target are wonderful about putting their maternity clothing on clearance for prices that are too good to pass up. I was VERY pregnant in the winter, so I have mostly warm maternity clothing. If I were to have a summer or fall baby next time, I will need some things that coordinate with the season.

Keep these things in mind as you do your shopping. Keep your eyes out for things that are staples, or stuff that is just too cute to pass up. You are sure to save money and pick up some amazing deals at the same time!

Holiday Savings

Tuesday, March 23, 2010

I know we are a few days past St. Patrick’s Day, but Easter will be here before you know it!

Post Holiday sales are great ways to save money on things you are interested in buying. The day after a holiday is the best day to purchase items while retailers still have the “good stuff” – everyone knows that. Well, did you know that they often package regular merchandise in holiday wrapping, thus having to clearance these items out? Heck yeah!

You don’t care if your M&M’s are pastel, or Easter colors, do you? Do you care if your Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup is in the shape of an egg? ME NEITHER! Does it bug you that your chapstick wrapper has a little bunny on it? I didn’t think so!

In the next couple of weeks, look beyond the candy and artificial grass for things that you would regularly buy. If it has an Easter package, odds are that it is on clearance.

The best examples of this are from after-Christmas shopping. Target, for example, packages many items that they carry in holiday boxes and bags to help entice people into buying them as gifts. Once Christmas is over, these items are immediately clearanced-out and you purchase regular, everyday items at 50% or even 75% off! Once you open the package, the product is no longer a “holiday item”!

Another great way to save money and relieve yourself of holiday pressures is to purchase things that you will need next year while they are on clearance from this year. I have already purchased several items for my toddler for Christmas, and I intend to do the same for next year’s Easter. If you have the space, pick up next year’s egg-dying kit or a few Easter basket “ingredients” for next year, based on the age(s) of your child(ren). This is a fabulous way to save a ton of money and you will be SO happy with yourself when you go shopping for special occasions, birthdays or holidays and you already have a SERIOUS head start. This takes the pressure off of the holiday hustle and bustle, and off of your wallet as well. Spread the burden out over several months and you’d be amazed how much less stressful it can be.

Check your mail!

Monday, March 22, 2010

Today was like Christmas when I opened the mailbox! I found a postcard from Kohl's for $10 off my next purchase (no minimum purchase requirement)!!

The best thing about Kohl's, in my view, is that they are always sending out a new coupon as soon as the previous one expires. My 15% off coupon expired yesterday and I found a new coupon in the mail today!

I also received a flyer from Great Clips with three coupons inside. The coupons were haircuts for $4.99, $5.99, and $6.99! What a steal! These coupons are great, especially for small children who need their hair trimmed constantly! If you have a Great Clips in your area, check your mailbox and give them a try!

Remember, it is not inappropriate to go into a store and say, "I have a friend who received XYZ Coupon. How do I sign up to receive coupons such as these?"

Getting Paid For Your Opinion

Monday, March 21, 2010

I just saw a television commercial that reminded me of something that I want to tell you about!

The commercial was for a website that allows you to sign up to receive opinion surveys for cash and prizes. I am a little skeptical, but I signed up anyway. I was bombarded with emails from several research companies that asked me to complete surveys. Most of these surveys were questionnaires about me and my family. Visit Bigspot.com to sign-up and participate in surveys!

If you are not interested in completing surveys online, I have participated many times (and so has every member of my family) in a variety of surveys and studies performed by Peryam & Kroll Research Corporation. I have tested everything from crackers and pizza to shampoo and razors. Here is how it works:

P&K has many testing facilities – visit P&K Research Corp. to find one near you.
You walk into the testing facility that is nearest you, and sign up to be a participant in studies.

The telephone operators phone you and ask you several questions regarding upcoming studies. Answer honestly – there is no way to tell what they are looking for.

If you qualify for the research study, they will set up an appointment for you to return to the P&K nearest you and participate in the study. Studies usually last about 45 minutes. Children are not allowed to wait unattended.

If you participate in a study “in-house,” you will receive cash payment at the end of the study. Payments vary but are usually around $30. C’mon – you know you want $30 for tasting some pizza and telling them what you think of it!

If you participate in a “take-home” study, you will go to your local P&K location, pick up the materials, and follow the instructions within. These are often prolonged studies, for example, testing razor blades for two weeks. Upon completion of your study, you return the materials to P&K and fill out the survey. Take-home studies usually pay more. I was once paid $100 for testing razors for several weeks.

I look at it this way – if you are going to shave in the shower anyway, or use body wash, why not get paid for using their products and critiquing them!? In my opinion, it is a win-win situation. If you can find time in your schedule (probably less than once per month) to have a short conversation with them on the phone, qualify for the study, and participate in the study, you will earn a bit of extra fun money! What have you got to lose?!

Peryam & Kroll is certainly not the only research facility of this kind. They are, however, the only company that I have personally been affiliated with and can share my experiences from.

Babycenter.com

Sunday, March 21, 2010

The first thing my OB/GYN said to me when I became pregnant was, "Stay off of the Internet! It will drive you crazy!" Well, of course, I couldn’t listen...totally. So, to follow his advice as best I could, I was very selective about the websites that I patronized. I found one website to be knowledgeable, user-friendly, and welcoming. Baby Center!

BabyCenter is such a wonderful website for women trying to conceive, women struggling to conceive, expectant mothers, mothers who have miscarried, and mothers of children of all ages. If you are interested in signing up, you input your due date and BabyCenter will send you a weekly email about your child's development. My favorite, by far, was the earliest weeks of pregnancy when so much of your baby's development is occurring. I knew when she got her fingerprints, when she was the size of a peach pit and when she had color to her eyes. It was so comforting, and exciting to know every step as it occurred.

Now that I am the Mom of an older, growing child, I am often asking myself questions like, "Why is she refusing to let me hold her spoon?" "Why is she having difficulty napping?" "Is this normal?" "Is that normal?" And before I know it, my weekly email from BabyCenter pops up and they are SPOT ON with her development. It is so comforting to know that your baby is developing much like other babies their age.

Another favorite facet of BabyCenter is the "birth month club." You can read funny threads, or serious ones, written by mothers who are due to deliver in the same month as you. My all-time favorite threads were the "confessions" that people wrote about their daily occurrences. "I drank a mountain dew and my baby is bouncing around in there like crazy." "I wanted to attack the cashier at Taco Bell because he was slow to give me my gorditas." DOESN'T IT JUST MAKE YOU WANT TO GO READ SOME?! They are so funny!

I also had the opportunity to sign up for many email coupons and values through BabyCenter's advertisements. They offer so many fabulous deals for parents, and they just pop up before your eyes!

Check out BabyCenter and you are sure to find great deals, find a "home" on the Internet, and find a good belly laugh when you visit!

Money-saving Tricks

Saturday, March 20, 2010

Good morning! Today’s blog is a hodge podge of just a few things that I have been doing lately to save myself money, and make my days easier.

When I start my day, I pack my husband’s lunch and I like to have SOME idea of what the dinner plan is. If something needs to be thawed or marinated, I start that process in the morning. With the use of PARCHMENT PAPER, I can make my dinner duties much easier. I bake fish, chicken, vegetables, cookies and oven fries on parchment paper. The greatest thing about parchment paper is that it is easy to tear, non-stick, and once you are finished baking on it, you toss it in the garbage and your dishes are done! The cookie sheet stays clean! Parchment paper is oven and microwave safe and makes my life SO much easier. I haven’t discovered a store-brand of parchment paper, but Reynolds makes a great product. It usually runs about $3 for a roll and the roll will last you quite a while. If you are going to check out the 99 Cents Only Store (see my blog from Monday, March 15th) I found my parchment paper for $.99 for 8 – 15in x 12in sheets! You will love how easy doing the dishes becomes when you use parchment paper.

I noticed that there were two things that we were purchasing regularly, that I could make myself and save a significant amount of money doing so.

The first of these items is pudding. I was putting a cup of pudding in my husband’s lunch every day, and Emily and I would share a cup of pudding on occasion. These packs of ready-to-serve pudding can run anywhere from $1.00 for (4) to $3.00 for (6). When those packages will only last you one week, you find yourself buying pudding every time you run to the store! So, I decided to buy store-brand instant pudding mixes, and make the pudding myself. You can either 1.) buy some tiny containers – I found mine at Target for $1.00 for a package of 9 or 2.) save baby food jars (glass or plastic) to be refilled with pudding. All you need is 2 cups of milk, and the package of pudding mix which runs less than $1.00.

Pay close attention to when your milk will expire, because the pudding will expire when the milk expires! I have found that I can make more pudding for significantly less money if I do the work myself. I can also control whether we are eating sugary or sugar-free pudding, and what kind of milk goes into the pudding to reduce the calories that are in each serving.

The second item that I have chosen to make myself is Gatorade. During the summer with yard work, softball, swimming, and playing, we seem to go through a lot of Gatorade! We usually purchase the largest bottle of Gatorade (one gallon) at Wal-Mart for around $4.00. When I began staying home full-time, we talked about cutting back on expenses such as this. I did a little price-comparing while I was shopping one day, and realized that I could keep the gallon bottle that I had purchased last time, and refill it with water and powdered Gatorade! A can of powdered Gatorade runs about $6.00 and makes about six gallons. So, I could have purchased six pre-made gallons of Gatorade for $24.00 or make my own Gatorade for $6.00. The powdered stuff tastes exactly the same and saves us a TON of money!

I’m sure that we do many things like this as we move through daily life. These are just a few of the most money-saving tricks that I implement on a weekly basis. This blog is not intended to get you thinking about pudding or Gatorade. It is designed to get you thinking about the things that YOU buy and how to save money on them!

Auctions!

Friday, March 19, 2010

Today’s blog is about something that I am only semi-familiar with, but I’d love to become an expert.

Let’s back up. I have very gracious friends who are often complimentary of my home’s furnishings and decorations. As I look around, I see NOTHING in my home that I have paid full price for. Of course, I have received beautiful gifts and lovely gestures and I have no idea what they cost. However, I DO know that I own nothing that didn’t come from Hobby Lobby, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Ross, Target, Wal-Mart, Goodwill, The Salvation Army Store, or garage sales.

Having said all of this, I exclusively shop these discount venues and have made a beautiful home in the process.

I would like to try something new to add to my “shopping rounds”. I would like to try an auction. I received an e-mail from my Dad regarding auctions that storage companies have when their customers leave their belongings behind. Securlock Storage Center has set up an email notification system that allows members to receive emails about up-coming auctions that they will be holding. How fun and swanky does THAT sound?! I’d love to try it and I’ll definitely blog about my experience when I attend the auction. I will be very disappointed if I find that they are not auctioning off pre-owned merchandise for fair prices, given the situation. They explicitly state, on their home page, that they are able to hold auctions to free up more storage spaces in their facilities, and offer the public great deals on previously owned items.

Exciting! Who wants to go with me?!

Reynolds Slow Cooker Liners

Thursday, March 18, 2010

Hello?! Somebody call Oprah!

Who do I need to chew out for not telling me about Reynolds Slow Cooker Liners?! They are so amazing!

I absolutely HATE scrubbing and soaking (lather, rinse, repeat) the Crock-pot every time I use it. I use mine often because it is so easy to brown a pork or beef roast and toss it in for the rest of the day. Now it is even MORE lazy-friendly because you line the inside basin and fill the Crock-pot with whatever marinade you will be using, plop the meat (or stew) in, and it cooks exactly as it would without the liner. When you are finished, remove whatever you want to save, gather the rest up in the liner and toss it into the garbage.

These liners were NOT expensive, at about $2.00 for four liners. I had a $1.00 off coupon, so that made them even MORE attractive! The instructions on the back of the box say to let the Crock-pot cool entirely before removing the bag, but my obsessive-compulsive ways won’t allow me to leave the Crock-pot on the counter for that long, SO, I decided to remove the liner as soon as I was ready to serve dinner and put the Crock-pot away. It was TOTALLY fine and I will NEVER cook without the liners again.
If you’ve been using these things for, like, a year already – don’t even start with me!

Who forgot to tell me?!

Tide Stain Release

Wednesday, March 17, 2010

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

When I got married, I noticed that the pile of clothes that needed stain treatment was WAY bigger than when it was just my laundry – IMAGINE THAT! Then, when I had our first baby 15 months ago, the pile was just totally out of control. I have found that OxiClean (or Sun Oxygen – its less expensive competitor – found at Big Lots) does a nice job on the laundry load as a whole, but does not eliminate the toughest of stains. Most of the toughest stains come from things like baby formula and spit-up. These stains are tough because they contain protein. Like blood, formula and spit-up have so much protein in them that the stains are here to stay. As Emily has gotten older, we don’t have to worry about formula stains or spitting up, but carrots, sweet potatoes, and squash are all brightly colored stains that she wears proudly on EACH AND EVERY item of clothing!

What to do about this?! A few months back, I received a coupon in the Sunday paper for Tide Stain Release. Tide Stain Release is an in-wash “booster” that comes in a capsule much like dishwashing soap packets. You simply add the capsule to your water and detergent and throw the clothes in. You DO NOT have to wait until the capsule melts. I have found that Tide Stain Release does an AWESOME job on tough stains without soaking or pre-treating. I think it smells a bit like Sweet Tarts, but that’s just me. I can find a candy or chocolate smell in just about anything so you’ll have to test it yourself. I have been really happy with how helpful the capsules are and how much less scrubbing and pre-soaking I have had to do.

Another part to this success story is hanging clothing up to dry. Unless I am washing play clothes, old t-shirts, or jeans and undershirts/underwear, I typically hang our clothing up to dry. I find that it maintains the colorfastness of our clothes and prevents “nubbies” from forming on our cotton fabrics. Beyond this, it gives you the opportunity to inspect clothing as you are hanging it up and notice stains that didn’t quite come out on the first try. The dryer is the kiss of death for stains. Once you dry a piece of clothing, the stain is set in. If you can catch the stain before it makes it to the dryer, you have a much better shot at working the stain out. Tide Stain Release has coupons in the Sunday paper nearly every week, and most stores carry a variety of sizes that you can buy the bag in. Purchase the small bag for the first try and see how great your laundry looks! You will love not having to spend hours treating yucky stains!

My next test is going to be the new Biz Stain Fighter. I will compare the price and the viability of the product to Tide Stain Release. I’ll keep you posted!

Seconds and Surplus

Tuesday, March 16, 2010

Many of you already know that my house is my hobby and I really enjoy reusing, repurposing, and remodeling. Each time we plan for a “house project,” there is a lot of research that goes into finding the best prices on the supplies that we will need. Time and time again, we have found that Seconds and Surplus is a great place to get building/remodeling supplies at hugely discounted prices. They have everything including flooring, countertops, doors, bathroom décor, kitchen cabinets, molding, hardware and doorknobs. We have purchased numerous items from there at such great prices that we always make Seconds and Surplus our first stop.

For those of you in the Dallas area, Seconds and Surplus is located at Hwy. 75 and Arapaho in Richardson, Texas, although they have additional locations. Not only do they have fabulous prices on home improvement supplies, but they are extremely helpful and knowledgeable about their products. If you are interested in saving money but are not interested in remodeling yourself, they contract with local companies that are willing to install Seconds and Surplus products at a discounted rate. For example, they sell slabs of granite countertops in a variety of colors and patterns. They have a list of recommended installers that they will partner up with in order to get your countertops installed. They have been so helpful and patient any time we have had questions about projects or materials.

If you are not within driving distance to Seconds and Surplus, simply Google “discount building supplies” or something to that effect to find a venue similar to them in your area.

99 Cents Only Store!

Monday, March 15, 2010

When I comprise my list for grocery shopping, I usually need to shop three stores in order to complete my list. I could get everything that I need at a discount price by shopping at Wal-Mart, but I have chosen to try and start my shopping at Big Lots and the 99 Cents Only stores before I complete my shopping at Wal-Mart. I have already told you how FABULOUS Big Lots is for discount groceries and baby items. So, today we need to talk about the 99 Cents Only store!

Visit www.99only.com to find the store nearest you!

I was first introduced to the 99 Cents Only store when I moved back to the North Texas area in 2005. My Mom was helping me start my professional life and set up my new apartment. I was a bit overwhelmed with the cost of everything that you need when starting out. For example…a plunger. You never even THINK about needing a plunger until you desperately need one!

So, my Mom dragged me, willingly, to the 99 Cents Only store. This particular store is like a dollar store on steroids! They carry name-brand and off-brand grocery items, storage items, health and beauty products, gift wrap, cleaning supplies, and BEST OF ALL…PRODUCE! Their stock is constantly changing and is different from one week to the next. I typically buy as many fresh produce items as I can at the 99 Cents Only store. A bag of purple onions for $.99. A bag of avocados for $.99. A shrink-wrapped package of cucumber, zucchini, tomatoes, etc. all for $.99. Two pounds of jalapenos for $.99. Their prices are just awesome, and I always leave feeling like I’ve just robbed the place! Give it a try – especially if you shop for a lot of children’s snack foods and lunch-packing foods. Their assortment of soda is something that they always carry. Four cans of soda for $.99 and their variety is sometimes overwhelming! Party supplies and gift bags/wrap is another thing that they carry an endless supply of. I could go on and on. Give them a try – the savings will be incredible!

Chocolate!!!

Sunday, March 14, 2010

Have you ever been in such dire need of chocolate that you find yourself tearing the kitchen apart looking for a morsel? Don’t fool yourself – you know you’ve done it! Well, that was me yesterday.

My sister, Jourdan, started telling me about this bakery in Frisco that sells CAKE BALLS and how delicious they looked when she was watching her co-worker eat them (poor thing). We looked online, and the bakery was already closed, and they won’t be opening up again until Tuesday. OH NO! What to do!?
Google a recipe for cake balls! All of the recipes that we looked at called for a pre-packaged cake mix and a can of icing. Well, we didn’t have that either. So, we decided to get creative and make the cake recipe on the back of the Hershey’s baking cocoa. We BARELY had enough cocoa to make the cake, so what are we going to do about the icing?! And the ganache?! No worries, I have a package of melting chocolate that I purchased for $1.00 at Big Lots that will work! So here’s what we did:
1. Bake the cake according to the package directions
2. Straight out of the oven, crumble the cake into a large bowl
3. Mix in ½ of the package of melting chocolate (or the entire can of icing if you have one)
4. Stir until well blended
5. Melt the other ½ of the melting chocolate (or whip up some ganache if you have the ingredients on-hand) and dip each ball into the melted chocolate with a fork (or if you are us, your bare hands work better!)

These cake balls were SO delicious and relatively easy. It is a messy job but sometimes those are the most fun. They were a hit with our family and made PLENTY to share. We are eager to experiment with different combinations of cake flavors and icing/ganache varieties. This would be a great recipe to get the kids involved with because it is an assembly line style process. For example, one person crumbles cake while the other adds icing. One person rolls the mixture into balls while the other dips them into the ganache. Try it!

Ebates - a great new website!

Friday, March 12, 2010

Today, let’s talk coupons again. It is, after all, one of my favorite subjects! We’ve talked coupons before, but let’s GO THERE! By go there, I mean – GO OUT AND GET YOUR COUPONS, GIRL! The ones that show up in the mail or the Sunday paper are fine, but I want to save MORE MONEY!
Here’s how it works. When I was looking for my new Coach diaper/laptop bag, I decided to search the Web for a Coach coupon. So, I simply typed “coach coupon” into my Google search bar and BOOM! 20% off coupons appeared! I couldn’t believe my eyes!
My wonderful friend, Becca, has been following my blog and noticed that she had a great secret to share with me. The secret is Ebates! I visited their website and read a short summary of “how it works” and I must say, I AM SO EXCITED TO GIVE IT A TRY!! Basically, before you do your online shopping, you visit Ebates and find the store that you were about to shop. Ebates will show you exclusive coupons, and you have the opportunity to earn cash back on your purchases! How sweet is that?! Another *BONUS* is that if you refer a friend, BOTH OF YOU receive $5 from Ebates for signing up and purchasing something through Ebates! I’m so excited to give it a try! Thank you, Becca, and HAPPY SAVING!

Bath and Body Works Freebies!

Thursday, March 11, 2010

I know I have mentioned in the past that signing up to be on mailing lists (and email lists) is a great way to earn coupons and find great savings at the stores that you frequent. My favorite in the past couple of weeks has been Bath and Body Works. By signing up to be on their email list, I have received two coupons via email for free travel-size products with no purchase necessary. I love free stuff! I needed a tube of lip gloss anyway, so I printed my coupon and headed to the mall. My current favorite scent is a fairly new one called “Sensual Amber” on a recommendation from my sister, Jourdan. By visiting the store, I was able to choose from a travel-size body spray, a travel-size body lotion, or a travel-size hand sanitizing gel. I chose the lotion first, and will continue to capitalize on my freebies as I receive them. I will have the whole set in a matter of weeks! Their travel sized products are larger than those that you would find in the grocery store and have proven to be superior products. As I have said in the past, it is FREE to delete emails from your inbox that you are not interested in, but you won’t receive fabulous deals if you don’t sign up! Visit your local Bath and Body Works store, or Bath and Body Works Online to sign up!

Schedule

Tuesday, March 9, 2010

When I made my transition from working outside the home to working in the home, the transition was more difficult than I had imagined. I was so excited and ready to be a Stay-At-Home Mom, and the transition took me a bit by surprise. I was constantly thinking, “What would people think if they knew that I hadn’t had a shower before 2pm?!” “Dinner isn’t on the table at 5pm…how did this happen?! I’ve had all day!” But I have changed my thinking – though I still struggle with those thoughts on occasion. I decided to set up a flexible schedule that worked best for me. Here is a rough idea of the basic schedule.
Monday – house cleaning day. Stay in your grubbies and do whatever house work needs to be taken care of. For me, laundry is a part of this because the bed clothes, towels, dish towels, and rugs are all a part of my cleaning regimen. Not to mention, the clothes that I’m wearing to clean in could use a scrubbin’ too! Plan an easy dinner that isn’t labor intensive.
Tuesday – finish whatever house cleaning chores didn’t get finished on Monday. Organize and straighten anything that needs it.
Wednesday – groceries and other errands. Wednesday is also my day to go through the Sunday paper for coupons and ads. Sprouts honors last week’s sales AND the coming week’s sales on Wednesdays, so that is the perfect day to get fresh produce and anything else that you typically purchase at Sprouts for more sale prices!
Thursday – I designate Thursdays as the catch-all day for whatever I haven’t had a chance to do in the beginning of the week. Dry cleaning, bills, organizing or cleaning something that hasn’t been cleaned or got messy since Monday. If you are all caught up, Thursday is a play day!
Friday – Fridays are designated play days for Emily and me. All of the chores have been completed, and other than a quick load of laundry, we play and spend time together before I go to work on Friday evening.
I tried a few different combinations before I found one that worked well for me. I tried cleaning one or two rooms each day, and realized that I felt like I was perpetually cleaning! With this schedule, I feel more accomplished in my responsibilities and nothing gets so dirty or dusty that I’m overwhelmed at the prospect of cleaning.
With this schedule comes PERMISSION. The permission to wander around Target if you just CAN’T HACK cleaning on Monday. It’s only Monday and you have the rest of the week to get it done. Because these things are getting done once per week, if the kids are sick and the cleaning doesn’t get done, it will get done the next Monday and no harm is done!

Consignment Shopping

Sunday, March 7, 2010

Consignment sales are at the top of my list for saving money as you raise a family, second only to clearance and garage sales! There are many consignment stores for a variety of different types of purchases. Specifically, I frequent children’s and maternity consignment stores for gently used children’s clothing, shoes, toys, accessories, and furniture. My VERY favorite consignment store is Kid to Kid. There are many different locations across the DFW metroplex and they are very committed to only accepting gently used items that are in excellent condition. Once Upon A Child is another favorite, but their stores are slightly larger and can be a bit overwhelming if you are new to consignment shopping. Divine Consign is a twice-yearly consignment store that stocks up on consignment items and then displays them all at once in a grandiose sale in Plano and Grapevine, Texas. Today was the Divine Consign sale in Plano located inside Plano Centre. If you are just reading this and FREAKING OUT, no worries! They are continuing to sell tomorrow and Tuesday. Check out their website at www.divineconsign.net. Also visit Kid to Kid and Once Upon A Child for locations and store hours. As we all know or will soon come to realize, our children grow faster than we can believe sometimes! One day their shoes fit perfectly, and the next they are too small! What about that sweet potato stain that will just NOT COME OUT?! Well, I haven’t found a way to stunt my daughter’s growth or a miracle cure for formula and baby food stains, but I have found a way to keep it from breaking me! Shop consignment stores!! People consign gently used and often brand new clothing, toys, and shoes that I am too thrifty to buy new! As I have said in previous blogs, I find that I can truly justify that pair of to-die-for sandals for my toddler because I purchase all of her other belongings at pennies on the dollar. Today was not a total booty-haul because I wasn’t in the market for very many things. My husband and I purchased a See-and-Say, a toy piano, a small wooden toy, 6 or 7 pieces of summer clothing, a puzzle, and a portable high chair for a total of $51! The most expensive item was the portable high chair at $10!! What a steal! The neatest thing about Divine Consign is that they carry EVERYTHING under the sun for babies, but you have to arrive early and hunt – and as the sale winds to a close on Tuesday afternoon, everything marked with an “X” on the tag is 75% off!
As always, you must be an educated consumer and know what you would typically pay, or what you are willing to pay for certain items so that you will know what is a good deal and what is not. If you have missed the Divine Consign sale this time, join their mailing list and catch them next time. Fortunately, Kid to Kid and Once Upon a Child are open 5-7 days per week.
Conversely, if you are overwhelmed with clothing , toys, furniture, shoes, and accessories that your child(ren) have outgrown, why not make some cash?! Check the website for details, as there are guidelines about how to present your items for consignment.

New Hair!

Friday, March 5, 2010

For a girl who loves to do new things to my hair, the day I finally make time to go to the salon is one of my favorite days. I went to have my hair cut and colored on Wednesday and I am SO happy with how it turned out. My hair dresser and I didn’t make any drastic changes, but it feels so good to have a fresh cut and vibrant color. I took Emily, my 14-month-old back in today to have her first salon haircut. I am BESIDE MYSELF with how well her hair turned out! She looks so freakin’ cute and she has an attitude to match! If you are looking for a new hairdresser, I must recommend T.G. She is a fabulous hair-dresser that I stumbled upon in a chain salon about three years ago. It was just by luck that I got to have her cut my hair. It was one of those days where nothing went right and I was throwing a tantrum about my ugly, heavy, flat hair. I decided to pop into the salon after work and take a leap of faith. Well, she did a fabulous job! I have been going to T.G. ever since. She is now in a private salon called “Tangles” in Wylie right near the F.M. 544 and Hwy 78 interchange. Her prices are VERY reasonable and I feel like she truly listens to my ideas and helps me make good decisions about hair styles and color. She styled everyone’s hair for my sister, Jourdan’s wedding and everyone looked so very elegant. If you are looking for a new stylist, give T.G. a call at Tangles! (972) 442-9362.

New shoes, wahoo!

Thursday, March 04, 2010

I have officially become an old woman. I saw an old friend at a restaurant who had on particularly cute tennis shoes. So, I did what I always do – I asked her where she got them. I’ve been searching the universe for stylish white tennis shoes that look good with jeans or khakis, but aren’t “athletic” shoes. Well, no one wanted me to have the shoes that were in my mind, but the shoes that I found are the closest thing to it! The reason I say I’ve officially become an old woman is because I bought CLARK’S! Now, don’t get offended because your closet is stuffed full of Clark’s and Easy Spirits. I absolutely LOVE my new Clark’s! They are the Privo style and I found them at the Allen Premium Outlets off of Stacy Road in Allen, Texas. They weren’t exactly “cheap” at $49.99, but I feel okay about spending the money on a pair of nice, leather shoes when I purchase everything else at clearance prices. I knew I needed something that was comfortable and durable as I chase my wild toddler around. I will no longer knock people who wear Clark’s because they feel like I have my slippers on! Don’t knock ‘em until you try ‘em!

Infant Formula

Wednesday, March 03, 2010

Today’s post might be a bit of a controversial one. Inevitably, this topic seems to be a hot-button issue for a lot of people. Every expectant mother makes the decision whether to breast-feed or formula-feed their babies. There is a lot of research out there that supports breast-feeding as being the best decision for babies. This may be the case, however, it was not the right decision for me. I did not have the desire to nurse, and I knew that I would have to be very patient, diligent, and driven in order to succeed with nursing. I knew from the beginning that it was not the right choice for me. After I made that decision, I had to decide what the best formula choice for Emily would be. It was an “eenie-meenie-miney-mo” choice between Enfamil and Similac. I chose Similac, but I noticed that, as a member of both Enfamil and Similac’s mailing lists, I received much more valuable savings from Enfamil in the mail. Occasionally, I walked out to the mailbox to find a sample size jar of formula inside! SCORE! I stuck with the name-brand formula until she was about 7 months old, and then felt comfortable to switch to a more cost-effective brand. I, of course, made this transition with the support of my pediatrician. The guidelines are simply to find formula that contains DHA and ARA for babies’ brain and eye development. As long as these ingredients are present, the formulas are the same, except for the label, and of course, the price! By purchasing name brand formula, you are likely to spend nearly DOUBLE what you spend on store-brand formula. Parents Choice formula was my personal preference, but I also purchased formula from Sam’s (Member’s Mark), and Target (Up and Up) on occasion. The store brands are also coming out with more and more varieties of formula to meet your needs such as Lipil formula, and formula for sensitive bellies. Whether you intend to nurse your baby or formula feed your baby, you will probably make the transition to formula sooner or later. Do NOT feel pressured to buy expensive, name-brand formula until you have tried it for yourself. When you read the ingredients on the back of the cans, they are the same! Just another way to keep costs down!

Diapers!

Tuesday, March 2, 2010

Since I became a Mom 14 months ago, I’ve had several friends ask me if I had any helpful hints or secrets to offer up. The biggest secret that I am constantly having to restrain myself from telling people in a given store on a given day is…BUY CHEAP DIAPERS! I have tried a LOT of styles and brands. When we were expecting, both my husband and I were Public School teachers. My school hosted a baby shower for me, and his school hosted a diaper pounding for him. Diaper pounding is just an old-fashioned way of saying that everyone participating brings the expectant parent diapers or wipes. If you are ever offered a shower, ASK FOR A DIAPER POUNDING! They are awesome! We didn’t buy a single diaper for 8 weeks and we lasted even longer than that with the wipes. So, having said all of that, we have tried a lot of different kinds of diapers! The diapers that held the most “matter” without leaking, and stayed in place were the Parent’s Choice at Wal-Mart. They are also significantly less expensive than their name-brand equivalents. The Up & Up brand of diapers at Target are also superior to any other diapers we have found. However, I have an issue with big, silly prints on the diapers as if my kid even cares about what her diaper has on it. Winny the Pooh?! Seriously? My kid can’t even see her butt, so the only person who gets “enjoyment” out of the pictures on her booty is me, and I don’t like seeing Eeyore poking out beneath a sheer onesie! The Parent’s Choice brand diapers have a small, gender-neutral pattern around the top of the diaper that does not seem to show through clothing. The Up & Up brand diapers have GIANT blue and green dots on the whole diaper. These dots DO show through her clothes, making Parent’s Choice my all-time favorite diaper when she was 6 pounds and now that she is 25 pounds. Don’t let people pressure you into buying the newest, most fabulous product on the market. Stick with the Parent’s Choice or Up & Up diapers!

Make-your-own baby food

Sunday, February 28, 2010

When I made the transition to being a stay-at-home-mom, I was searching for ways to save that would truly impact my family. I have found that making my daughter’s baby food myself is a true savings! For instance, a 16oz. bag of Great Value brand frozen broccoli runs just over $1.00 at Wal-Mart. By steaming and pureeing the vegetables yourself, you can get about 6 - 4oz. jars of baby food for around $1.00 instead of spending around $.45 for each jar at the grocery store. Here is the process:
1. Steam the vegetable according to package directions or slightly longer for easy pureeing.
2. Drain the water from the vegetable, PRESERVE WATER
3. Puree vegetable using a food processor or hand held processor.
4. The more of the preserved water that you add, the smoother the pureed vegetable will be. It is more useful to use the vegetable’s water than tap water because the nutrients from the vegetable are still contained in the water.
5. Portion into plastic baby food jars or small containers. Before I began this process, I started collecting the plastic 4oz. food containers that her packaged baby food came in. Once I had about 20 containers, I felt prepared to make her food myself. I then let the vegetables cool on the counter and freeze. I have tried boiling chicken, but it was a bit dry for my taste (and hers), probably because I didn’t add enough of the preserved water. It was crumbly and she did not care for it. I now purchase her meats. I also purchase her fruits because it is usually not cost-effective for me to buy frozen fruit and puree it. I can save myself the work and simply purchase her fruits at Big Lots (see yesterday’s blog!). However, frozen vegetables (or even when the raw carrots are getting a little bit dry and ready to be tossed, steam ‘em up!) are very inexpensive and they are sold in a variety of combinations. I have yet to find a vegetable that my daughter refuses to eat. (Ok, ok, I know I’m fortunate when it comes to her eating. Don’t hate me!) I prefer to make the mess only once and steam/puree all of the vegetables that I can prepare given the amount of containers that I have. Try it, I think you’ll really find that its kinda fun and saves a TON of money!

Coupons!

Saturday, February 27, 2010

As we ventured out for some Saturday errands, my blog topic slapped me in the face. STORE COUPONS! Because I shop mostly store brand items for groceries, it is rare that a grocery coupon comes in handy for me. I also receive many online offers from stores that I patronize frequently. However, I find myself checking those emails daily and deleting them. I most often delete them because I don’t think that the coupons offer truly great “deals.” However, there are three stores that I frequent who, I believe, offer truly remarkable savings, and they offer this savings often.

The first is Big Lots. If you have never shopped at Big Lots (or Job Lots) YOU ARE MISSING OUT! They carry name brand furniture, home décor, baby items, children’s items, groceries, health and beauty, and toiletries at MAJOR discounts. Once you are a member of their “buzz club”, you receive the weekly advertisement in advance and occasional email coupons for 20% off of your entire purchase on a Sunday afternoon. You also receive a swipe card when you become a buzz club member. Once you spend $40 or more 10 times, your next purchase is 20% off as well. Because I have a young child at home, the most remarkable savings has been for baby food and oatmeal. Big Lots carries a variety of name-brand baby food for ½ of the price found in grocery stores. This is the case with most items that Big Lots carries. It truly pays to be a wise consumer and know the prices that you pay for the things that you buy often. Most things are a true value (110 zip lock sandwich bags for $2) but there is the occasional product that is not a good value. It is important to recognize these products.

The second store is World Market. We have purchased many of our home furnishings from World Market and have found that they make superior furniture for very reasonable prices. They will email you when they are running a sale on a certain piece/set of furniture so that you, as a rewards member, will learn about the “hot items” before the public does. This has proven to be a true value on many occasions for our family. They will also email the occasional 20% off your entire purchase coupon.

The final store that proves to be of real value to me as I work to find ways to stretch our money is Kohl’s. As a rewards member, I received a coupon for 15% off my entire purchase last Friday-Sunday. If you spend over $100, you receive %20 off your purchase! We usually shop the clearance racks, and Kohl’s is very diligent about 60% and 70% off of the regular price for clearance items. Today, my husband purchased a jacket, an argyle sweater, two casual long-sleeve t-shirts, and a button-down dress shirt for $30!!! These were all clearance items and we received 15% off our entire purchase. I am very pleased with the results today. Become rewards members – it is free to delete emails out of your inbox that do not meet your needs, but the occasional email is truly valuable.

Saving at the Grocery store

Friday, February 25, 2010

Let’s talk bargains! My favorite subject!! I am always looking for steals and clearance items. This week, I found my deals at Target – my home away from home. I noticed that they had replaced the “holiday aisles” (I’m waiting impatiently for them to unveil Global Bazaar) with a new concept that involves a consolidated section for clearance and some weekly specials. I don’t normally mess around with 30% off bargains, as I’d rather they quit messing around and give me the 75% off that they are going to eventually get to. However, for the past 2 weeks, Target has had their signature brand, Market Pantry 100% Pure Apple Juice on clearance for $2.08 for a two-pack of 64oz. bottles. I decided that $1.04 for a bottle of apple juice is a very good deal – rivaling the savings that you find when you buy concentrate. So…I bought a few! The juice is regularly inexpensive at around $4 for a two-pack, but I’ll take whatever savings I can get, especially since we’ve been drinking apple juice like it’s youth serum around here!

The other item that I found to be a particularly good savings was an economy-size box of Nabisco Triscuits. The box contains (4) bags of Triscuts for $4.18. When a box of crackers runs me nearly $3, I found $1 per bag to be a real savings. Happy shopping!

Baby Necessities

Thursday, February, 24, 2010

I think I’ll kick things off with the things that I have found most helpful in my adventures as a first time Mom. As we all know, EVERYONE wants to share their war stories and must-haves when you are expecting. This is a practical account of the things that have saved my butt on numerous occasions. Of course, everyone wants to talk about the most fabulous cradle and bouncy seat. Well, Emily would sleep in a pile of dirt if I’d let her. So, let’s not worry with the obvious stuff. Everyone’s going to buy a play yard and a crib. So, what do you ACTUALLY need? A cart cover! That thing is so amazing, I’m not even kidding. My cart cover is a Kozypal and it is AMAZING. You can purchase them from retailers like Target for around $25. I checked in with Melissa at Kozypal for a few weeks and found that she was having a fabulous sale. I got my $62 cart cover for $35! The small compartments that the cover has, the loops for hanging keys or toys, and the easy elastic ties make my cart cover my favorite baby product thus far. I use my cart cover nearly every day and I highly recommend them if your child is anything like mine – chewing the metal on any cart she can wrap her teeth around!

My second favorite baby product has to be my sling. They are available in much more fun colors and patterns than they have been in the past, and they come in very handy when you have a newborn/infant. I never quite mastered the “vacuum with ease” aspect, but I still love my sling! It offers hands-free shopping and your baby can sleep nestled close to you, or ride around on your hip while your hands are both free. My sling is a product of Babies ‘R Us and ran around $40. I found that I could more easily slide into my sling than I could maneuver my front-to-back carrier.

My third and final favorite baby item is definitely a gadget. As my husband and I registered for our baby shower, we were incredibly overwhelmed with all of the things on the market for babies. What on EARTH do we truly need amidst all of these things? Of course, you want to have the coolest new items, and my favorite find in the gadget department would have to be the Boon Squirt Baby Food Dispensing Spoon. They can be found at both Target and Babies ‘R Us for around $7. The spoon holds more than one 4oz. container of baby food, and as you gently squeeze the bulb, baby food fills the spoon and you can 1. feed your baby one-handed, and 2. avoid a huge mess. I found this item to be PERFECT for shopping trips because I could load the spoon prior to leaving the house. Emily was surprisingly less messy when we used the “Boon Spoon” because I could control messes with my left hand while continuously feeding her with my right hand. A dream come true!

Welcome to my new blog!

Wednesday, February 24, 2010

When I decided to start a blog, I thought back to all of the things that I have searched the Internet for in the past. I practically planned my entire wedding via the Internet, after all! These days, however, I am constantly searching for things that will make my life easier, save money, and of course, the impulse buys that we all succumb to! This blog is dedicated to bringing you the best products, the best prices, and the most fabulous deals that I stumble upon as I shop for my family and raise my 14-month-old daughter.

First, I feel obligated to tell you a little bit about myself. I am a former public school Choir director who made the transition to staying home with my toddler, Emily, last June. This has been the most rewarding transition of my life so far, but a challenge none the less! I am 27 years old, and I make my home with my husband, Sean, in Wylie, Texas. Wylie is a small suburb north of Dallas that butts up with Plano, Sachse, and Lavon, Texas. My husband is a high school English teacher who has current aspirations of becoming an administrator in the public school setting. To continue with my life-long passion of music, I teach private piano and voice lessons out of my home in the evenings. I look forward to sharing with you the things that I have found helpful in my adventures as a stay-at-home-mom/bargain hunter extraordinaire!
