Because of a brief visit from my mother-in-law, and a month of celebrations for my birthday, I've been eating out more frequently lately! I have noticed that several casual dining restaurants are offering incentives and e-mail sign-ups for specials and coupons.
On a random Thursday, we happened to be dining at the Chili's Bar & Grill in Allen, Texas. We noticed two older women standing just inside the door, handing small postcards to people exiting the restaurant. I didn't think too much of it, except that I'd probably get a hard sell for Mary Kay or something similar. Once we left, the friendly women handed us postcards as well. If you take a moment to fill out a brief online survey, Chili's will send you a $20 gift card. $20 gift cards for both adults in the home = $40 free to Chili's. HELLO!? Am I on Candid Camera!?
Chili's also had a small notepad for email sign-ups on each table. Everyone at our table signed up for specials and coupons through email. I'm looking forward to using my giftcard and watching for freebies via email!
Jason's Deli was kind enough to send me a $5 gift card via email for my birthday. I'll take $5 off, for sure!
I have also been a member of Texas Land & Cattle's email distribution list for a few years now. Each year on your birthday, they send you a different "gift." This year, I received a free appetizer if I will stop by within a month of my birthday.
Having said all of this, keep your eyes peeled for opportunities to sign up and receive freebies at restaurants that you and your family frequent.

So, I’ve told you several times before that retail stores are just itchin’ to have a sale. Any reason they can think of, and they’re going to bust out with a sale. Going through the Sunday paper reminded me of just that. Father’s Day is a perfect reason to have a sale on gifts for Dad, even if it is a stretch to see Dad in a floral apron or some designer perfume – it’s still all on sale.
I did notice, however, that a lot of apparel is on sale for men right now. Because my husband has a new job where he needs to be dressed a bit more formally than before, I am looking for ways to build his wardrobe without collapsing the bank account. JC Penney, Kohl’s and Target are all running specials on their polo shirts, dress shirts and neck ties. I purchased two polo-style shirts for my husband at Target for $6 each. Yes! The shirts I purchased were “athletic cut” shirts (designed for our broad shouldered/chested beaus) and they fit him very nicely. Their patterned, striped, and solid polos are on sale for $6, $8, and $10 each. Kohl’s and JC Penney each boasted $9.99 for their entire stock of polo-style shirts.
Although I purchased my husband’s Father’s Day gift several months ago, I was able to capitalize on specials for Father’s Day to meet other needs. Don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled for things that you may want to tuck away for Christmas, Hanukah, or a birthday. You will save some serious cash, and all you’ll have to do is remember to wrap it when the time comes. LOVE IT!
Secondly, it is such a strange adjustment when you have been paying for only two meals at restaurants for a number of years. Our 17 month-old daughter is old enough to eat a complete child’s meal at a restaurant, and she’s never met a food she didn’t like. No…really. We are used to spending between $20 and $30 on dinner for the two of us at a medium-caliber restaurant. We are now pushing $40 each time, and we are usually a little bit blown away at the unexpected expense.
What to do about this? Patronize restaurants where kids eat free! Many restaurants, including Dickey’s Barbeque, feature KIDS EAT FREE with the purchase of an adult entrée. Occasionally they will run the special for an entire month, but this special is currently for Sundays only. Applebee’s is offering a free child’s meal with the purchase of an adult entrée on Mondays. Luby’s is currently offering the same promotion. Super Salad frequently sends significant savings through coupons, and they boast a “kids eat free” promotion as well. Having listed these, the majority of these restaurants are not places that I would readily choose if given the option of where to eat. However, if it is the difference between planning, cooking, and cleaning up after a big meal, I could be easily swayed.
Frequenting places where your children eat free could potentially save you enough money to eat out additional times in any given month. A bit of light research for promotions at your favorite dining destination is worth the work!

Hello! Sorry I haven’t written in a few days, but I don’t like to write just to write. My goal is to write things that will be of true value to you.
So, yesterday, my sister and I decided to take a trip to Hobby Lobby. It had been a few weeks since we had both been in, and we wanted to see everything in the whole store.
We browsed aisle-by-aisle, and we were both so impressed with the selection and variety, as well as the sales they were offering. About half of the store was on sale, and I am confident that the other half will be on sale next week! Hobby Lobby is really great about their sale items.
We were both looking for inexpensive ways to spruce up items that we already have in our homes. For example, I purchased a few drawer pulls that were ½ off, and the new pulls give the appearance of refurbished nightstands or nightstands that got a little “face lift”! I’m really happy with the result, and it only cost me around $5!
As a busy mom with a busy family, I began a habit years ago that has worked well and keeps me from following behind everyone, folding and refolding towels. I purchase attractive, decorative hooks that hang in the bathroom, usually at two different levels (Daddy’s is tall, Mommy’s is short) for hanging towels. The appearance is appealing and the labor is quick and easy. Instead of folding your towel in thirds, you simply hang the center of your towel on a hook. The towels dry more thoroughly and I don’t find myself fixing everyone’s towels because they’re crooked or hurriedly folded. So, I purchased a couple of hooks for our guest bathroom/Emily’s bathroom so that I can start moving toward redecorating that bathroom. The hooks were less than $2 after the 50% off sale. Score!
Hobby Lobby has also introduced something that is new to me. In each aisle, there are inspirational pamphlets that are free for the taking. These pamphlets highlight merchandise that Hobby Lobby carries regularly, and what you can do with these items. Everyone has ideas and concepts floating around in their mind, but it is so refreshing to see what someone else has come up with. I picked up about 10 inspirational pamphlets and will put my own personal spin on some of their ideas. Instead of feeling “stuck,” I feel more creative and motivated to try some of their suggestions.
As always, if you are a member of Hobby Lobby’s email distribution list, you can preview the coming week’s sales on Sundays. They also send a coupon that is usually 40% off one regularly priced item. Although I primarily purchase things that are ½ off or clearance, it is nice to take the coupon with you JUST IN CASE you can’t live without something that isn’t on sale while you’re there.
We always try to find the best way to create what we want without spending a lot of money, and Hobby Lobby is our go-to destination for help with our projects. Bows, quilts, dresses, wall-hangings, décor, home fragrance, and party decorations are on the short list of things that we shop Hobby Lobby for on a regular basis.
You will be so excited and proud of yourself when you make something with your own hands and see how beautifully it turns out!

I really hope that you have already signed up for Kohl’s email and mailing distribution lists. They have sent me TWO postcards this week with $10 FREE! No purchase is required. I intend to spend $20 or $25 at Kohl’s next week and spend $0 or $5 of my own personal money! How delicious is that?!
I also received an interesting email from Target this week. They have introduced a new program of printable coupons via email. I viewed THIRTEEN PAGES of printable coupons, many of which I would likely take advantage of. You simply click the box within the coupons you are interested in printing, and Target.com compiles those coupons for you. You can then print ONLY the coupons you are interested in utilizing. I am at Target at LEAST once per week, and I intend to utilize all of the savings techniques that they offer. Many of the coupons are for household and grocery items, but some of them are for items that are exclusively Target’s. For example: 10% off of patio furniture, $10 off a Kodak camera, and $5 off the ottoman of your choice. These are great deals that I am highly likely to take advantage of!
One more thing that I have begun taking advantage of is customer surveys. Many of the stores that we patronize offer discounts, or sweepstakes-like incentives as a reward for giving them feedback about your experience while shopping in their stores. Old Navy has offered 10% off your next purchase for filling out a short online survey for quite a while. Target offered me the chance to win $3,000 after taking part in a short online survey. Walgreens offered me the opportunity to be placed in a drawing for a $500 shopping spree after participating in their online survey about my experience. I have yet to win anything, but I will continue to take 5 minutes of my time to share my opinion (which is never lacking) and who knows?! I could be the next winner and so could you!

Okay, so Garage Saling today was a bust. We knew it was going to rain, but didn't think people would actually BACK OUT of the garage sales they had already applied for permits for, but whatever - we will try it again in a couple of weeks.
Instead, we decided to spend an hour or so at Kohl's because of the coupons that we had accumulated in the last couple of weeks. Here's how it came out for me:
1 shirt for Easter Sunday $38 on sale for $21.99
1 set of summer pajamas for my toddler $20 on sale for $9
1 blingy ring $20 on sale for $7.99 + 20% off of jewelry = $6.39
1 fabric hair flower $10 on sale for $4.50
TOTAL: $88 on sale for $41.88
$10 off coupon = $31.88
15% off total purchase coupon = $4.79
Kohl's tax free (9%) savings = $2.44
TOTAL PURCHASE PRICE: $26.68
It states right on my receipt that I saved $63.35. So basically, I got my four items for LESS than the retail price of my shirt, or for roughly the retail price of toddler pajamas. WHAT?! As the lady on the IKEA commercial says, "START THE CAR!"
In recent months, Kohl's has saved me more money than any other store that I frequent. Of course, I frequent a lot of discount stores like Ross, Marshalls, and TJ Maxx, so it is often difficult to pinpoint exactly how much you saved off of retail prices, but I'm sure it is always significant. However, my savings at Kohl's is written in black and white on my receipt and I am on a high!!

This weekend, I will be taking advantage of several email coupons and discounts I have received in the recent past.
Kid to Kid
I received a coupon for Kid to Kid Children’s and Maternity Consignment in my email this week. The coupon is for $5 off when you spent $25.
Plato’s Closet
Plato’s Closet is my favorite local consignment boutique for men and women. When I took some items in to consign, I entered my email address into their database. About an hour after I left, I received a coupon for $5 off my next purchase at Plato’s Closet.
Save-A-Lot
There was a segment on the local news this morning about Save-A-Lot Food Stores. The segment highlighted Save-A-Lot’s dedication to low prices and fabulous online coupons. I visited their website, and discovered that there were over SIX PAGES of printable coupons for a variety of grocery items. I am interested in being added to their mailing list (the segment this morning mentioned receiving a coupon for $5 off when you spend $20) and discovering even more savings opportunities. The woman that led the segment on the news purchased $80 worth of groceries for $44!
Remember…these are simply guidelines. If you do not live in the North Texas area, or are in a community where none of these stores are available, I encourage you to venture out and discover what IS available to you. Maybe you have a Job Lots instead of a Big Lots. Maybe your children’s and maternity consignment store goes by a different name. Start thinking about the venues where you can experience significant savings. ALWAYS REMEMBER – deleting unwanted emails from your inbox IS FREE, but you can’t receive savings if you don’t sign up!

Today was like Christmas when I opened the mailbox! I found a postcard from Kohl's for $10 off my next purchase (no minimum purchase requirement)!!
The best thing about Kohl's, in my view, is that they are always sending out a new coupon as soon as the previous one expires. My 15% off coupon expired yesterday and I found a new coupon in the mail today!
I also received a flyer from Great Clips with three coupons inside. The coupons were haircuts for $4.99, $5.99, and $6.99! What a steal! These coupons are great, especially for small children who need their hair trimmed constantly! If you have a Great Clips in your area, check your mailbox and give them a try!
Remember, it is not inappropriate to go into a store and say, "I have a friend who received XYZ Coupon. How do I sign up to receive coupons such as these?"

Many of you already know that my house is my hobby and I really enjoy reusing, repurposing, and remodeling. Each time we plan for a “house project,” there is a lot of research that goes into finding the best prices on the supplies that we will need. Time and time again, we have found that Seconds and Surplus is a great place to get building/remodeling supplies at hugely discounted prices. They have everything including flooring, countertops, doors, bathroom décor, kitchen cabinets, molding, hardware and doorknobs. We have purchased numerous items from there at such great prices that we always make Seconds and Surplus our first stop.
For those of you in the Dallas area, Seconds and Surplus is located at Hwy. 75 and Arapaho in Richardson, Texas, although they have additional locations. Not only do they have fabulous prices on home improvement supplies, but they are extremely helpful and knowledgeable about their products. If you are interested in saving money but are not interested in remodeling yourself, they contract with local companies that are willing to install Seconds and Surplus products at a discounted rate. For example, they sell slabs of granite countertops in a variety of colors and patterns. They have a list of recommended installers that they will partner up with in order to get your countertops installed. They have been so helpful and patient any time we have had questions about projects or materials.

For those of you in the Dallas area, Seconds and Surplus is located at Hwy. 75 and Arapaho in Richardson, Texas, although they have additional locations. Not only do they have fabulous prices on home improvement supplies, but they are extremely helpful and knowledgeable about their products. If you are interested in saving money but are not interested in remodeling yourself, they contract with local companies that are willing to install Seconds and Surplus products at a discounted rate. For example, they sell slabs of granite countertops in a variety of colors and patterns. They have a list of recommended installers that they will partner up with in order to get your countertops installed. They have been so helpful and patient any time we have had questions about projects or materials.

99 Cents Only Store!

When I comprise my list for grocery shopping, I usually need to shop three stores in order to complete my list. I could get everything that I need at a discount price by shopping at Wal-Mart, but I have chosen to try and start my shopping at Big Lots and the 99 Cents Only stores before I complete my shopping at Wal-Mart. I have already told you how FABULOUS Big Lots is for discount groceries and baby items. So, today we need to talk about the 99 Cents Only store!

I was first introduced to the 99 Cents Only store when I moved back to the North Texas area in 2005. My Mom was helping me start my professional life and set up my new apartment. I was a bit overwhelmed with the cost of everything that you need when starting out. For example…a plunger. You never even THINK about needing a plunger until you desperately need one!
So, my Mom dragged me, willingly, to the 99 Cents Only store. This particular store is like a dollar store on steroids! They carry name-brand and off-brand grocery items, storage items, health and beauty products, gift wrap, cleaning supplies, and BEST OF ALL…PRODUCE! Their stock is constantly changing and is different from one week to the next. I typically buy as many fresh produce items as I can at the 99 Cents Only store. A bag of purple onions for $.99. A bag of avocados for $.99. A shrink-wrapped package of cucumber, zucchini, tomatoes, etc. all for $.99. Two pounds of jalapenos for $.99. Their prices are just awesome, and I always leave feeling like I’ve just robbed the place! Give it a try – especially if you shop for a lot of children’s snack foods and lunch-packing foods. Their assortment of soda is something that they always carry. Four cans of soda for $.99 and their variety is sometimes overwhelming! Party supplies and gift bags/wrap is another thing that they carry an endless supply of. I could go on and on. Give them a try – the savings will be incredible!

Since I became a Mom 14 months ago, I’ve had several friends ask me if I had any helpful hints or secrets to offer up. The biggest secret that I am constantly having to restrain myself from telling people in a given store on a given day is…BUY CHEAP DIAPERS! I have tried a LOT of styles and brands. When we were expecting, both my husband and I were Public School teachers. My school hosted a baby shower for me, and his school hosted a diaper pounding for him. Diaper pounding is just an old-fashioned way of saying that everyone participating brings the expectant parent diapers or wipes. If you are ever offered a shower, ASK FOR A DIAPER POUNDING! They are awesome! We didn’t buy a single diaper for 8 weeks and we lasted even longer than that with the wipes. So, having said all of that, we have tried a lot of different kinds of diapers! The diapers that held the most “matter” without leaking, and stayed in place were the Parent’s Choice at Wal-Mart. They are also significantly less expensive than their name-brand equivalents. The Up & Up brand of diapers at Target are also superior to any other diapers we have found. However, I have an issue with big, silly prints on the diapers as if my kid even cares about what her diaper has on it. Winny the Pooh?! Seriously? My kid can’t even see her butt, so the only person who gets “enjoyment” out of the pictures on her booty is me, and I don’t like seeing Eeyore poking out beneath a sheer onesie! The Parent’s Choice brand diapers have a small, gender-neutral pattern around the top of the diaper that does not seem to show through clothing. The Up & Up brand diapers have GIANT blue and green dots on the whole diaper. These dots DO show through her clothes, making Parent’s Choice my all-time favorite diaper when she was 6 pounds and now that she is 25 pounds. Don’t let people pressure you into buying the newest, most fabulous product on the market. Stick with the Parent’s Choice or Up & Up diapers!

When I decided to start a blog, I thought back to all of the things that I have searched the Internet for in the past. I practically planned my entire wedding via the Internet, after all! These days, however, I am constantly searching for things that will make my life easier, save money, and of course, the impulse buys that we all succumb to! This blog is dedicated to bringing you the best products, the best prices, and the most fabulous deals that I stumble upon as I shop for my family and raise my 14-month-old daughter.
First, I feel obligated to tell you a little bit about myself. I am a former public school Choir director who made the transition to staying home with my toddler, Emily, last June. This has been the most rewarding transition of my life so far, but a challenge none the less! I am 27 years old, and I make my home with my husband, Sean, in Wylie, Texas. Wylie is a small suburb north of Dallas that butts up with Plano, Sachse, and Lavon, Texas. My husband is a high school English teacher who has current aspirations of becoming an administrator in the public school setting. To continue with my life-long passion of music, I teach private piano and voice lessons out of my home in the evenings. I look forward to sharing with you the things that I have found helpful in my adventures as a stay-at-home-mom/bargain hunter extraordinaire!
